This Good Practice note is based in the Shajapur district, one of the most arid areas of Madhya Pradesh. The note documents how Tree Grower Cooperative Societies secure community tenure over common lands; build social capital through multi-stakeholder village institutions reflecting a successful community based natural resource management effort. This has led to a significant increase in biomass, vegetative cover, fodder and water availability that has in turn contributed positively to improving livestock development.

Major outcomes from these community led initiatives comprise both material flows from the commons as well as strengthened social capital in the community.
