Shahabadi

The Shahabadi, is native to the erstwhile Shahabad (subsequently bifurcated into the Bhojpur, Rohtas and Buxar districts), Patna and Gaya districts of Bihar
They are medium sized leggy animals. The fleece colour is mostly grey, sometimes with black spots. Ears are medium-sized and drooping, and the tail is extremely long and thin. Both sexes are polled. The fleece is extremely coarse, hairy and open, and the legs and belly are devoid of wool. Flocks generally comprise 5 to 6 rams and 70 to 80 adult ewes and their young. The average annual fleece weight is 240 gms with an average fibre diameter of 50 μ and a medullation percentage of 87.
According to the 18th Livestock Census of 2007, there are 21,073 Shahabadi sheep in the country. (Refer to maps below)
