Orientation
The corner-stone of SA PPLPP is the facilitation of an on-going dialogue among key actors playing a direct or indirect role in the livestock sector of South Asia and to learn from Good Practices (GPs) in the context of pro-poor livestock development. It is about learning from field realities that work at the ground and use the lessons learnt to influence livestock-related policies and institutional change that will have a positive effect for poor fe/male livestock keepers.
Experience has shown that the better livelihood dynamics are understood, what the limitations are for the poor to benefit from livestock, and the roles and functions animals play in a livelihood system, the higher the chances of identifying the most relevant Good Practices. Thus the identification of good practices is also seen as an iterative process of learning and goes hand in hand with developing an understanding of pro-poor livestock development, building capacity in documentation and the use of simple tools to sensitize actors, build coalitions and influence policy formulation and implementation. Apart from obtaining evidence through analysing the GPs identified the learning process leads to achieving SA PPLPP’s goal of ‘equipping local, state and national Governments of participating countries with skills, data and know how to design pro-poor livestock policies’.
